Learn About Us

Center for Secured Health and Environmental Development Initiatives (SHED AFRICA)

SHED Africa (Center for Secured Health and Environmental Development Initiatives) is a non-governmental organization founded in 1998 with a strong commitment to the interconnectedness of healthy human communities and thriving ecosystems. We recognize that the well-being of coastal and high forest ecosystems is deeply linked to the health of the people who live in and around them. Women and youth play vital roles in maintaining healthy communities. When their financial status and opportunities improve, the benefits extend to stronger families, better health outcomes, and more sustainable environmental practices. We believe that communities both urban and rural are more likely to conserve and protect natural resources when they directly experience the benefits of sustainable utilization.
To work with women and youth in Nigerian communities to achieve improved livelihood systems, reproductive health and biodiversity management, through evidence-based research, design of intervention, skill development and networking
Nigerian communities where improved health and livelihood security are enjoyed by all.

Scale up programmes in nutrition, renewable energy, reproductive health, and enterprise development.

SHEDAFRICA aims to significantly expand its core intervention areas to reach more communities across its operational states (Cross River, Adamawa, Edo, Akwa Ibom, and FCT Abuja). This includes rolling out enhanced nutrition programs to combat malnutrition among children and mothers, promoting wider adoption of renewable energy solutions like improved cookstoves and waste-to-energy briquettes to reduce deforestation and indoor air pollution, strengthening reproductive health services.

Pursue strategic partnerships with donors, government, and private sector

SHEDAFRICA recognizes that sustainable impact requires collaborative ecosystems. This priority involves actively seeking new funding partnerships with international donors (e.g., expanding beyond USAID/UNICEF), strengthening collaborations with federal and state governments for policy alignment and co-funding, and engaging the private sector for corporate social responsibility initiatives in health, environment, and enterprise development
